When I moved to live in a small village in the south of France, the previous owners of the house I bought mentioned that they used to keep dozens of tortoises there. At first I didn’t think much of this remark, but as the job of renovating the house proved slower and more arduous than I had anticipated, birds were soon displaced in my imagination by these more terrestrial plodding creatures!
